surface sizing agents

Surface sizing agents are applied to the surface of the paper to control its absorbency and improve its printing properties. By forming a film on the paper's surface, these agents enhance the containerboard's resistance to water, abrasion, and penetration of liquid or gaseous substances. This increased resistance ensures the durability and integrity of the boxes produced, even under demanding conditions. More than their functional role, surface sizing agents contribute to the overall quality and appearance of containerboard. They provide a smoother, more uniform surface for better printability, ensuring the delivery of visually appealing and brand-enhancing packaging materials. This property is of particular importance to companies that rely on packaging not just for protection but also for marketing their products.

a solution for a water-resistant surface

In the wider context of sustainability, the use of surface sizing agents helps to reduce the rate of paper fiber loss and dusting during the box-making process. This not only improves the efficiency of the manufacturing process but also aligns with the industry’s drive towards reducing waste and environmental impact. By incorporating these agents into product formulations, containerboard manufacturers can deliver durable, visually appealing, and sustainable packaging solutions that meet the growing demands of the packaging industry.

A surface sizing solution, Styrene Maleic Anhydride (SMA), provides effective cross-linking between the components of surface size solution (Starch, PVA, CMC) and cellulose, resulting in improved hydrophobicity and increased dry strength. SMA provides superior wicking properties yielding a sharper and higher quality print.

Maleic anhydride is a key raw material (manufactured by Aurorium) that brings a combination of reactivity, functionality, and compatibility to both ASA and SMA chemistries.  SMA copolymers exhibit unique properties due to the presence of the maleic anhydride units, including good heat resistance, dimensional stability, and the potential to improve adhesion or compatibility in blends and composites. starch modifiers fight grease
paper & packaging takeout you can handle

When ordering food to go, we all have experienced a paper bag or food container that has lost its structural integrity from being saturated with grease. This can be prevented by coating the inside of the food takeout container with a starch that stops oil from seeping through. These starches are treated with additives such as Indapro™ 5820 that help stop the bag from becoming soggy and creating a greasy mess.
